Let’s Support Learners in Responsible Digital Literacy and AI Use: Webinar October 29
At Empower Generations High School, we are committed to helping our learners navigate our evolving digital world responsibly. One area that has become increasingly important is digital literacy, which includes understanding how to appropriately use tools that incorporate artificial intelligence (AI).
Today, many simple tools that support writing—such as Google Docs’ built-in grammar, sentence, and tone suggestions—use forms of AI. Often, learners may use these features without realizing that it qualifies as AI assistance. Our goal is not to discourage the use of technology, but rather to help learners understand how and when AI tools are appropriate to use in academic work.
Recently, some AI detection tools have been introduced to identify patterns that could suggest automated phrasing or structure. While these tools can be informative, they are not definitive proof of AI use. They simply raise questions that help us start conversations with learners about authorship, process, and responsible digital practice.
We want to emphasize that we are less interested in “catching” learners and more focused on teaching responsible digital practices. AI is not “against the rules” — in fact, it’s something we also use as a school to enhance productivity and creativity. What matters most is that learners understand how to use AI ethically, give proper credit when needed, and continue to develop their own critical thinking and writing skills.
As AI becomes an essential part of education and the workplace, this is an important moment for us to guide learners together — before they transition to college or careers where these tools will be even more common.
Parents and caregivers, thank you for your partnership as we continue to prepare our learners for a future that values both innovation and integrity.
