Ms. Kim – Guide

Hello families and learners, Happy Women’s History Month!

Did you know that back in the 1800s women writers and authors often published their work under a male name or anonymously because that was the only way their work would be successful at becoming published? The author of one of my all-time favorite books, Mary Shelly, first published her novel “Frankenstein: or The Modern Prometheus” as an anonymous writer. It was not until later that she finally revealed her identity and published later editions under her name. Some cool facts and a “you learn something new everyday” kind of moment.

Ms. Marian – New Guide

Maya Angelou is one of my favorite writers. Her work is a reflection of real life that people experience everyday. She is considered to be prolific. This quote by her is one that I have lived by and it makes me look at myself and the person I show the world that I am everyday.

Who are you telling the world you are everyday?

Thank you to the entire learning community (Guides and Learners) for the warmth, assistance and acceptance I have received this week. It made starting this new job much easier, and I am super grateful.

When reading, try some fiction. There are many different kinds of fiction you will enjoy. There is mystery, adventure, comedy, romance, and science fiction. If you go online, you can browse by types of fiction that are of interest to you. Or, go to a bookstore. Often, bestseller lists can inspire you to pick an exciting choice.

March is an exciting month for seniors in high school. I am working on helping our seniors complete their FASFA/Dream Act Applications, along with Cal Grants, and any other grant/scholarship information that is available for our learners. I am also focusing on Spring Senior Grad Checks to ensure that 12th graders have a graduation plan.

Mr. Sean

March is upon us! As we celebrate women’s history, now is the time to have conversations about the world we live in and equity! We have been talking about intersectionality in advisory with learners. Here is a fun fact to promote Black History and Women’s History:

Claudette Colvin refused to give up her bus seat 9 months before Rosa Parks did.

Rosa Parks’ contributions to the Civil Rights Movement are undeniable. But nine months before she refused to give up her seat on a bus for a white person in Montgomery, Alabama, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin did the same thing on the same bus system. But Colvin isn’t widely recognized for her act. On March 2, 1955, the day she was arrested, she had been learning about Black history at her school.

“My head was just too full of black history, you know, the oppression that we went through,” she told NPR in 2009. “It felt like Sojourner Truth was on one side pushing me down, and Harriet Tubman was on the other side of me pushing me down. I couldn’t get up.”

She was one of the plaintiffs in Browder v. Gayle, the case that ended up overturning bus segregation laws in Montgomery.

March is here! And before we know it this school year will be over! We will have end of the school year activities, please be on the lookout for fundraisers and events. We are looking forward to prom and graduation amongst other activities and events.

Don’t forget, if you need anything or have any suggestions please email me at roselia.calderon@empowergenerations.org.

In honor of Women’s History Month, I would like to highlight some fascinating facts about Women’s History. This week, I will highlight the fact that every women’s history month has a theme. According to Woman’s Day magazine, “the 2022 theme is ‘Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope,’ according to the National Women’s History Alliance. This theme not only honors the tireless work of caregivers and frontline workers during the Covid-19 pandemic, but also women of all backgrounds who have provided compassionate healing and hope for the betterment of patients, friends, and family.”

There’s no doubt that being physically active is good for your health and should be part of your daily routine. Most importantly, find an exercise routine that works best for you at home or the gym. Here are a few fun facts about fitness:

  1. People who don’t regularly exercise may lose up to 80% of their muscle strength by age 65.
  2. Regular exercise helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels — two major risk factors for heart disease.
  3. Improve your mental health and mood with an exercise routine.

Welcome to Workshop Cycle 2!

In Cycle 1, learners worked on projects related to math, English, and an elective. Now that they are wrapping up those projects, they will transition to new projects focused on science, history, and health.

Guides will be updating learners and family on progress. These updates will help learners plan the remainder of their semester. Learners who did not finish Cycle 1 will be provided opportunities to complete missing work and receive additional support. Learners who successfully completed their projects will have the opportunity to accelerate with a new elective.

Please make sure to start the cycle strong. Ask questions, attend zooms, and use your flipped time wisely!

Mr. Troy – Care Team

If you buy a car for $1,000 and sell it for $1,100, then later decide to buy it back for $1,500 then sell it again for $1,600, did you make money or lose money?
