Ms. Rosie – Office Manager

Hello Families and Learners!

One of my favorite country songs is Alan Jackson’s “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)” It is a song about September 11, 2001. I know that our learners were not
born yet, but they can always ask any adult. The events behind September 11th are still very vivid in our minds. I was getting ready for school, it was the first week of my college freshman year. Although it was an unforgettable day, we momentarily united as a country, as a community. Let us remember that unity always.

Here are some updates for this week:

  • We are planning on many events for our learners. Get involved with iSupport; let me know if you want more information.
  • Please remember that IDs are now required to check in and out of school. If you have not taken your picture and received your school ID, please come see me.
  • If you have any updates to registration, or any paperwork you have not turned in, I am available Monday through Friday, you can email, call or stop by.
  • There is no school the week of October 10-14.

My email address is roselia.calderon@empowergenerations.org or by phone (661) 429-3264.

Mr. Moody – Guide

As school counselors, we know that a growing number of learners continue to experience severe challenges related to anxiety, depression, self-harm, and ultimately, suicidal ideation. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month — a time to raise awareness of this stigmatized, and often taboo, topic. We use this month to shift public perception, spread hope and share vital information to people affected by suicide. Our goal is ensuring that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help. There are an average of 123 suicides each day in this country. It’s the tenth leading cause of death in America — second leading for ages 25-34, and third leading for ages 15-24.

In order to create awareness and strengthen the fight against suicide, the entire month of September is Suicide Prevention Month. Participate in the fight by getting involved with local organizations and listening to those who need help. If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. Call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

If you noticed, I love to include a weekly quote in my Monday Message. I LOVE quotes because they are quick, short, and they often contain very powerful or helpful messages. But what makes quotes fun is that most of them are NOT literal, which means it is up to us to determine what they mean to us.

If you have a cool take on any of the quotes I share or know where I got it from, I welcome you to come chat with me about it! I love talking and I also love giving out candy and small prizes to learners who like to participate (hint-hint).

“All the secrets of the world are contained in books. Read at your own risk.”

Ms. Kim – Guide

Happy Monday learners and families, congratulations on finishing your first week of workshops! I know the first week can always be a bit confusing, especially with getting used to the schedules.

A lot of learners have asked me, “Ms. Kim, when is the new school going to be done?” I think it’s safe to say that a lot of us are also asking ourselves that same question. My answer to that is, very soon! In the meantime we need to ensure that we are doing our best to stick to the schedule that is in place for now.

What does that look like?

  • Make sure you are logging on to Zoom for all of your classes on time
  • Attend in person on your assigned day
  • Mondays everyone is virtual, Tuesdays are Ms. Jeanette’s Advisory, Wednesdays are Ms. Tanya’s Advisory, and Thursdays are Ms. Kim’s (my) Advisory
  • Make sure that when you do come to campus you come prepared with both your laptop and charger
  • Lastly, come with a great attitude and ready to learn and have fun

I am looking forward to the amazing projects I know you will develop in the end!

Ms. Marian – Guide

Happy Monday! Last week was a hectic but wonderful first week of workshops. We are all still trying to get into the swing of things and the heat has made it a little tedious to keep it
all together.

If you are not completing the assignments, I am available to help. Please log in with me during flipped time and receive one on one or small group attention.

This week we will be looking at Cells in STEAM1 and I hope to see you there. My email address is marian.tell-coffield@empowergenerations.org. Parents, please accept your
Google invitation to the Google classroom, If you can’t find it or have not received one, let me know and I will gladly add you to our classes. It’s a great way to stay up to date on your learner’s progress.

Ms. Jeanette – Guide

Wow, it’s already Week 4! This means that LP 1 is ending on Friday. LP stands for Learning Period. In independent study schools such as ours, attendance is reported to the state every 20 days or Learning Period. Learners can only be counted as present if they have been consistently completing work in all of their courses.

In order to make sure that you get counted as present, please make sure that you have a minimum of two assignments completed in EACH Google Classroom. Your best work samples should also be uploaded to your sample folder during Advisory this week.

Please contact your Guide if you need support getting your work completed.

Word of the Week: Consistently

● Consistently is an adverb, a word which describes how an action is completed.
● Consistently means always or in every case.
● Example: When you consistently eat fruits and vegetables, your health will improve dramatically

Ms. Tanya – Guide

Congratulations on completing the first week of your workshop projects! Although there were a few hiccups with schedules and Zoom sessions, we are off to a great start! I would like to commend all of the learners who have been actively participating in workshop on campus as well as workshops online! Your enthusiasm and positive energy is contagious!

Please be sure to submit your daily assignments in order to be marked present for the learning period. It is really important to stay on top of your classwork!

Next week, in the “News from the Camps” project, we will be diving deeper into the concept of Japanese interment and exploring how this historical event has shaped our society, art, and music.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at tanya.fornelli@empowergenerations.org.

Hello learners! You will learn things at school that should be clearly relevant to you and your life. You made it through your first week of Workshops/Projects. As you go through your workshops, you will gain knowledge and skills to help you grow in life. You have an active and constant role in your learning. It may not always seem like it, but you’re in control of your own failure or success. Remember to stay on top of your school work, be organized and keep a positive attitude.

Ms. Jennifer – EPIC

Week 2 of Workshops/Projects is here! I am glad I met most of you during your first week. Thanks to those who took part and introduced themselves to me. You will need to learn how to network and build rapport with others in your personal and professional life. The service learning and internships workshops are excellent opportunities to practice your communication skills and strengthen your networking skills. Please do not be afraid to seek my help and support. Keep in mind, every action you take today impacts tomorrow
and the future. You are capable of accomplishing anything. Believe in yourself because I do. In any case, I am looking forward to being part of your success journey.

Reminder to self: Use your planners as a tool to keep track of your assignments and projects. It aids in planning and organizing your weekly tasks.

I hope everybody has had a wonderful weekend! For this week’s Fun Friday I plan on having a board game day. Feel free to bring your favorite board games, and myself and Mr. Twigg will also be bringing in some of our favorites, too.

Mr. Jonathan – Care Team

Welcome to your third week! This week was pretty hectic, but I feel like we got a lot done. I’m really proud of you all putting in the effort and getting to know us as well as yourselves. I look forward to many more amazing days with you all and our Guides. I’m really amazed with all of you!
