Hello Families and Learners!
We are continuing to highlight inspiring Latinos/Hispanics in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. This week, I want to highlight Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who became the first Hispanic Woman Supreme Court Justice in U.S. history, making her the third woman to ever serve in the Supreme Court.
Here are some updates for this week:
- No meetings on Friday, September 30th, 2022, for Student ILP’s, please work independently.
- Household Data Collection forms went out with registration, but there were some that were either missing or not accepted by the system. Please look out for these forms and fill them out. These forms are very important and need to be completed.
- Please remember that IDs are now required to check in and out of school. If you have not taken your picture and received your school ID, please come see.
- There is no school the week of October 10-14.
My email address is roselia.calderon@empowergenerations.org or by phone (661) 429-3264.

In establishing school and community partnerships, school counselors work with learners, their families, school staff, and community members. In fostering partnerships, school counselors have an essential and unique role in promoting, facilitating and advocating for collaboration with parents/guardians and community stakeholders.
These collaborations are an important aspect of implementing school counseling programs that promote all learners’ successful academic, career and social/emotional development. School counselors work to improve student outcomes through the facilitation of school-family-community partnerships. School-family-community partnerships
have increased learners’ successful academic, career and social/emotional development. School counselors are called on to create, lead, facilitate and assess these partnerships and work to remove barriers to these helpful collaborative relationships.

A new week means a new quote to give you some insight! I always like to read a quote and think to myself “In what situation was this said?”, “Why was this said”, and more importantly “Why is this quote being passed down and shared?”
Before the written word existed, many cultures relied on oral retellings of events and stories and often it’s hard to remember a wealth of stories. This is where quotes came into relevance. With each phrase comes the knowledge of libraries, all you have to do is unlock it.
“We all have light within us, and as we grow and develop our light will only continue to shine brighter. But caution: for it is impossible to shine a light without also casting a shadow.”

Happy Monday learners!
We are officially in the fourth week of project cycle 1! This week my learners will dive into the creepy ambiance of Edgar Allan Poe’s writing, explore the ways in which 1920s America introduced the concept of consumerism, and continue to build their knowledge of the Spanish language.
As a reminder, if you/your learner have fallen behind I have open office hours over Zoom during 5th period flipped time. Learners are more than welcomed to join me on Zoom in the afternoon and ask me questions or work more independently 1 on 1 if they need the extra support.

Yes, it is definitely a Magic Monday. I had so many amazing ILP meetings this past week and I am super excited to help you achieve the goals you have set for yourself. I was especially excited to meet so many family members/accountability partners.
This week during workshop, I heard some fantastic reading. I also saw a lot of learners turning in assignments and making an effort to get help when they needed it. Thank you for your effort towards your learning.
PLEASE REMEMBER: Check in during flipped time for assistance with assignments. Sometimes we treat it like a study hall and take time to catch up on missing/past school work. If you are in need of special assistance please send me a message or email for appointments. I AM HERE TO HELP YOU.

In CTE class you should have completed your Entrepreneur Biography. It brings a totally new perspective when you can understand an entrepreneur’s background story. In some ways, it becomes relatable and even achievable. A lot of us don’t realize that a lot of successful entrepreneurs grew up in similar circumstances as you and I. This assignment should have piqued your interest as this assignment allowed you to choose your entrepreneur. I can’t wait to see your biographies!
Ms. Jennifer – EPIC
Happy fourth week of workshops! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Remember to stay on top of your classes, assignments, and projects as we continue moving forward over the coming weeks. Last week, I discussed the importance of communication and active listening; start incorporating them into your own lives (e.g., school, home, relationships, work, etc.). It is essential to begin developing those valuable skill sets. It will be challenging, yes. But that is part of the learning process. Therefore, you must be open and willing to work on improving yourself. Begin by transforming yourself into the best version — YOU. You have complete control over what you can do to work toward improving yourself and reaching your academic goals and personal goals. Be prepared to participate, pay attention, and actively listen in all of your classes!
