Hello Families and Learners!

Happy September! Here are some updates for this week:

  • No school, Monday, September 5, in observance of Labor Day.
  • Please remember that IDs are now required to check in and out of school. If you have not taken your picture and received your school ID, please come see me.
  • If you have any updates to registration, or any paperwork you have not turned in, I am available Monday through Friday. You can email, call or stop by.
  • I hope you are able to stay fresh on these hot days. Make sure you are staying hydrated and wear sunscreen.

Mr. Moody – Guide

CalKIDS is a California state program that helps children save for college or career training after high school. The program grants up to $100 automatically to every child born in California on or after July 1, and up to $1,500 automatically to every eligible low-income student. CalKIDS gives children in California a jump start on saving for college or career training. To be eligible for CalKIDS, participants must be: Born in California on or after July 1, 2022; or an eligible low-income public school student in grades 1-12 in California. Please have your learner speak to their school counselor about this program if you are interested in CalKIDS.

Ms. Kim – Guide

This week we will finally be starting our projects! I am looking forward to working with our learners and exploring cool things, from reading works by Edgar Allan Poe to learning about what life looked like during the Roaring ’20s. Below you will find a brief description of the projects I will be leading for the first project cycle. Feel free to look it over and get yourself familiar with what you/your learner will be working on.

Gothic Horror Stories (English 9)
Learners will explore the genre of gothic horror specifically by reading some of the works by Edgar Allan Poe. They will learn about how a story is structured, what kind of literary elements are used within a story, and begin to analyze a story by using these new found skills. Their final project will be a “voice & choice” where they will have the opportunity to choose one of the short stories we read and create a visual such as a commercial, screenplay, spin off story, etc. and incorporate some of the literary elements learned throughout the course.

The Roaring ’20s (US. History/English)
This project will be interdisciplinary and will have a blend of U.S History and English content. This project will be broken up into two parts where the knowledge and skills are designed to build on each other. In Part 1, learners will explore the political, social, and economic impacts of the 1920’s commonly referred to as the “Roaring ’20s”. Part 1 will help prepare learners by giving them the proper background knowledge of this time period in order to do a novel study of “The Great Gatsby” in Part 2. For their final project of Part 1, learners will create a physical/or digital time capsule based on what they learned about the 1920s. This is meant to capture what life was like during the 1920s that will include things like letters, newspaper printings, music, literature, etc.

Mi Familia (Spanish)
For this project, learners will be introduced to the basics of the Spanish language. They will learn the basics such as how to say hello, introduce themselves to others, say where they are from, etc. They will also learn how to describe themselves as well as friends and family members. For their final project they will create a family album where they will demonstrate their knowledge of the language by writing descriptive paragraphs for themselves and each of their family members along with a picture/image.

Congratulations on the start of this brand new semester. I am so excited to get started learning content with you. I am virtual all the time and I look forward to seeing you online! Ms. Jeanette and I are coming together this year to create a different type of learning experience. PLEASE READ MS. JEANETTE’S MESSAGE to discover the details about the projects. Every morning, we will work together in our STEAM lab and explore Science and Math from different angles (get it? Angles — haha). This year is going to be so much fun.
I am available online for ALL learners and I am so ready to get going on this new and exciting year! It is my hope that all learners feel comfortable enough to ask me for help.

Ms. Jeanette – Guide

Projects are officially beginning!

Ms. TC and I are excited to introduce you to the world of STEAM. STEAM projects integrate science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. It is an approach that helps learners see the real-life applications for arduous subjects such as math. Please join us every morning for your STEAM Lab where we will develop new skills, conduct investigations, and defend our discoveries.

STEAM 1: Plant Power!
In this project, learners will strengthen their independence through exploring subsistence farming. Learners will work to design a garden plot which could provide food for their family while discovering what is needed to maximize their harvest. Along the way they will utilize math skills such as rates of change and functions to prove that their choices will truly yield a strong harvest.

STEAM 2: Rise of the Machines!
Our upper level STEAM project allows learners to unleash their creativity as they design and build a “robot.” Learners will create a Rube Goldberg machine to automate one task. They will utilize the engineering and design process to refine their robot while building math fluency in areas such as measurements, angle classification, and properties of triangles.

Word of the Week: Arduous
● Arduous is an adjective or describing word.
● Arduous means difficult or requiring great effort
● Example: Climbing the mountain was an arduous task, but the view from the top was worth it.

Word of the Week: Camaraderie
● Camaraderie is a noun (person, place, thing, or idea).
● Camaraderie means a trust or friendship that builds when you spend time together.
● Example: The first time he felt like he belonged was when he joined the football team; the sense of camaraderie was contagious.

Ms. Tanya – Guide

Hello learners and families! We are gearing up for another great semester of exciting projects.

Below is a sneak peek of the “News from the Camps” English and World History Project! Learners will be analyzing primary and secondary sources depicting life during Japanese internment.

Learners will be introduced to the topic of Japanese internment through various classroom activities including poetry, song analysis, and photo analysis. They will be creating a journal or diary accounting of their time before, during, and after internment. They can choose to come from any walk of life and any socioeconomic status.

As part of the journal/diary experience, they may include sound recordings, pictures, drawings, maps, etc. The purpose is to make the experience interactive and immersive for the reader.

Ms. Dani – Care Team

Happy Labor Day! I hope you all had a restful and fun weekend. The time has come to hit the ground running! Workshops begin this week and you all are at the starting line. It’s important to set some goals for school and stay consistent in working toward those goals. I want you to know I believe in all of you!

I will be teaching Entrepreneurship, Art, and EL this year. If you are assigned to any one of these classes I’m excited to be teaching you as these are areas of great interest for me. It is my hope that you’ll enjoy these classes.

New month, new goals! I hope you are having a great Labor day weekend. I am looking forward to working with all of you and teaching the Service Learning classes. Please start considering your potential career goals. If you’re unsure, discover what your interests and talents are.

This is your journey, and I will do my best to help you find your career path.

Remember to take 30 minutes of day to focus on your mental health and well-being.

Mr. Troy – Care Team

Since classes start this week, it’s important that we get a good start on our class work. We don’t want to fall behind already. If we start digging a hole now, by the end of the semester it’s going to be impossibly deep and insanely hard to climb out of.

Spend some time each day working so that you can stay above ground. Future you will be grateful!

Come Friday, I want to do a movie day. Any movie you would like to see, you can find me and tell me. Maybe we can vote on one to watch.
