Messages from the EG Staff
Ms. Kim – Guide
Congratulations learners, on completing the first project cycle! This past week, learners finalized their review and published it on our class website, “Empower Generations Young Critics.” Learners also had the chance to read and comment on their peers’ reviews in order to engage in conversation about movies, books, and TV shows. Job well done, young critics!
Ms. Marian – New Guide
I am Marian Tell-Coffield, a new Guide at Empower. I have been teaching for over a decade and learning for many years longer. I have worked as a professional dancer, shoe salesperson, choreographer, student, homemaker, boutique steward, makeup artist, sound tech/roadie, assistant athletic trainer, manager, personal trainer, body builder, assistant baker, and lab tech.
I believe that it takes many tries to get a personal journey onto a road that leads someone in a direction that “feels right.” I hope to be a valuable part of the team that assists learners at Empower as they find their life’s journey. I look forward to learning and guiding with everyone at Empower.

When I was very young, my mother instilled in me a love for the arts. I was exposed to the visual, written, musical and performing arts. She took me to art museums, concerts and the theater. She also ordered for me a subscription to the New Yorker magazine, which exposed me to great short stories and new writers. The one art form that inspired me the most was the theater. In college, I studied theater direction. There, I developed the skill of helping actors improve their performances, which eventually led me to working in film and television. All of the arts are a wonderful way to spend your time and, perhaps, lead you to a creative career.
Brian – School Counselor
Happy Black History Month! Did you know: Marle Van Brittan Brown was the inventor of the first home security system.
I will be working on FAFSA/Dream Act Applications and Senior Grad Checks.
Mr. Sean
Our learners are well on their way to completing their first POL of the new semester. I am excited to see how their hard work will pay off. Many of our learners vastly improved with overall work completion. It is my hope that this project has started to instill the confidence they need to continue moving forward.
Next week, learners will have the opportunity to complete any missing assignments. I am available to help guide learners, should there be any questions. Thank you for your continued support in their education.
Tanya – Guide
I am so excited to see how interesting the learner’s POLs (Presentations of Learning) are turning out to be. Over the course of the last 6 weeks, learners were tasked with answering the driving question, “How can I set, prepare for, and achieve an English Language Arts goal that improves a weakness or uses my strengths?”
We have artists sketching beautiful pieces that represent the main themes developed while writing creatively. We have learners creating Trivia Games based on their research. We have learners taking driver’s permit tests, writing poetry using the vocabulary words they studied, and future teachers preparing lessons on topics near and dear to their hearts. It is wonderful to see how well learners have reflected on their time management skills as well as their strengths and weaknesses in English Language Arts.

Hello Empower family and friends!
“Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life — think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.”

Congratulations on completing your first workshop cycle!
This week will serve as an intermediary week between Cycles 1 and 2. During this week, you will have time to complete missing assignments, study, and re-take your post-assessment, meet with your Advisor, and prepare your portfolio.
Portfolios will be shared with families during our upcoming Learner-Led Conferences so please make sure that you put in time, effort, and your best work samples! Can’t wait to see what you showcase!
